The Virginia Beach Sheriff’s department wants you to know that their office will never contact you by phone to collect money.  The latest reported scam is someone posing as a Sheriff (“Captain Holloway”) is telling people that he has a warrant for their arrest because of missed jury duty. The caller threatens to come down and arrest the person in handcuffs. To avoid arrest he says you must purchase green dot (reloadable) cards for whatever amount (the latest couple paid thousands) he chooses. He told this couple if they came down to the station they would be refunded, so they gave the caller the information off the cards. Once they went to the station, they were immediately told there is no “Captain Holloway” and they were scammed. There have been four reported cases this month alone and could be more, as people often feel ashamed to admit they have been scammed. Please contact the police if you have any information or have fallen victim to a scam.
