Home WiFi Security

These days it is necessary for homes, and especially small businesses, to have wireless networks. As these networks have become more common, cybercriminals have found ways to take advantage of people’s lack of understanding or concern regarding the vulnerability of protected and unprotected WiFi networks. The information exchanged and stored over WiFi networks, which often contains sensitive information such as social security numbers, account numbers, financial information, and passwords can be accessed by hackers.

Security Tips

Manufacturers have begun installing default security measures in wireless devices; however, the default settings are relatively easy to access, as they are available to the public on the internet. We strongly recommend that you change the default settings upon installing a device (or now, if not done previously).  We’ve listed a few tips below that you should consider when setting up your home or small business WiFi network.

  • Reset the administrator password with a strong and unique password (do not use any passwords you are already using for other devices).
  • Change the SSID (Service Set Identifier) to a name that is unique and does not identify you or your business.
  • Disable the remote management function.
  • Ensure that encryption is enabled. WPA or WPA2 is recommended over WEP.  [WPA3 is on its way as a new security setting]
  • Ensure that your firewall is enabled.
