July 1, 2013 Virginia law -healthcare providers must file medical claims to medical insurance company as not to adversely impact your credit report.
Virginia Code 8.01-27.5: Requires healthcare providers to submit their bills to a patient’s medical insurance company. This was an issue because some healthcare providers were refusing to submit the bills in cases of accidents – they were waiting to get paid as a result of settlement or verdict. This often times resulted in a negative impact on a patient’s credit, as they could not pay the bills and healthcare providers were submitting to collection agencies who reported past due accounts to the credit reporting agencies.
Virginia Code 18.2-186.3(D): The punishment for identity theft where five or more persons’ information was changed to a Class 5 felony and that of 50 or more people to a Class 4 felony.
