AAA estimates that 46.3 million people will be traveling 50 miles or more from home during the Wednesday through Sunday of Thanksgiving week, with the average distance being 549 miles roundtrip. This will be a 4% increase in travelers from last year and the highest volume since 2007. Approximately 41.3 million people (89%) are expected to travel by car and 3.55 million (8%) by plane, the most for flights since 2007. They also say we are likely to see the lowest gas prices over Thanksgiving since 2009, but airfare, hotel, and rental car prices are expected to be higher. President and CEO of AAA, Marshall Doney, said that the increase in travelers is likely due to the rising economy and greater optimism from the consumer.
