Background and Education

Ashley Robinson Winn was born and grew up in Norfolk, Virginia. The family business, which his great-grandfather founded, Winn Nursery, was started in 1885 and remains in operation today.

Robin graduated Magna cum Laude from Old Dominion University in 1978 in Business Administration and received his M.B.A. from Old Dominion in 1980. After receiving a doctorate in Business Administration from the University of South Carolina in 1984, he worked as a management trainer for AT&T Communications in Atlanta, Georgia. Robin taught at the graduate and undergraduate levels in the Management Department at ODU from 1985 until 1986. Robin then attended the Washington and Lee School of Law and graduated in 1989. Robin holds advanced law degrees from Georgetown Law School (individualized program) and College of William and Mary (Taxation).

Legal Experience

Robin has a true depth of legal experience, having practiced law in Tidewater for over 30 years. In 1990, Robin started out in Norfolk doing criminal defense work as a solo practitioner. He worked at a few local firms from 1997-2006 in a variety of legal areas, including family law, civil litigation, and criminal defense. For 14 years, from 2006 to 2020, Robin served as Deputy Public Defender for the City of Chesapeake, where he supervised eleven attorneys and personally handled over 4000 cases, including numerous jury trials and complicated murder cases. His work also included appeals, where he had several published decisions, including a reversed conviction in 2020.

Community Involvement

Robin was Finance Chairman of the Norfolk Democratic Committee and has been a member of Southside Lion’s Club from 2017 to present. He is a member of Owens Lodge of the Freemasons, the Virginia State Bar, and the Virginia Beach Bar Association. He was a Commissioner of the Chesapeake Circuit Court from 1992 until 1995 and has served on the Chesapeake Juvenile Detention Advisory Board. He ran for the House of Delegates in 1998. Mr. Winn is a member of First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk.

More About Robin

Robin is married to Andrea Winn and has a son Robin Winn Jr. who is in law school at W&L. He likes to spend time with his family and enjoys the beach, politics, ODU football and basketball, orchestra and cinemas, travelling to Cancun, beach music, church activities, arts, museums, and exercise. Robin and his wife enjoy visiting historical sites in Virginia and other parts of the country. Robin loves to read historical books.
